Hard Roll-Up Tonneau Covers: Slats, Drain Tubes and What Is Listed

A hard roll-up gives you a metal lid and still clears the whole bed. Buy one if you want more than vinyl between thieves and your cargo. Skip it if your truck and bed are not named, because fewer hard covers are listed by bed.

The short version

Buy a hard roll-up if you want aluminum slats and full bed access, and accept a premium price class. Rough Country's hard cover is titled for the 5 ft 10 in GM bed and the 5 ft Tacoma bed, with a manual we could read. BAK and TruXedo titles name trucks and years but no bed, so confirm yours.

Buy it if, skip it if

Buy it if

  • You want a solid barrier, in RealTruck's words, between thieves and cargo
  • You still want to roll the whole lid to the cab
  • You want a printed load figure, on the covers RealTruck lists
  • You are ready for the premium price class

Skip it if

  • Your bed is not named and the seller will not confirm it
  • You want the widest choice by truck: soft has more
  • You want the lightest cover: RealTruck calls hard covers heavier, though not heavy
  • You have a Tacoma and do not want the deck rails touched

Our pick: hard roll-up, 2019-2026 GMAd

Rough Country hard roll-up (2019-2026 Silverado/Sierra 1500, 5'10)

Hard rolling cover whose listing title reads: Chevy Silverado & GMC Sierra 1500 (2019-2026) - Aluminum Slat, No-Drill Install, Fits 5'10 Bed Short Bed.

Fits, according to the listing (maker's sheet read)

Chevy Silverado & GMC Sierra 1500 (2019-2026) - Aluminum Slat, No-Drill Install, Fits 5'10 Bed Short Bed (read November 3, 2026)

Check your exact year and bed length on the listing before you buy.

Why here: Title names years, bed and no-drill install, and the maker's manual is readable. Buy it if you have that short bed. Skip it if you have the 6 ft 7 in bed or the CarbonPro bed unless the seller confirms it.

Why buy it

  • Rough Country's manual lists clamps, drain tubes and a foam seal for the front of the bed
  • The manual's terms state 3 years on the structure, hinges, seals and hardware

Why skip it

  • The manual tells you not to exceed the rated weight capacity but prints no figure
  • It is a general manual, not one that names this listing

The load numbers, and where they stop

RealTruck's roll-up article lists a capacity of 400 lbs for three covers: BAK Revolver X4s, BAK Revolver X4 TS and RealTruck Sentry CT. It also calls 400 lbs the recommended average for hard-folding covers. That is a statement about those products from their maker.

Rough Country's manual says not to exceed the rated weight capacity and not to exceed your truck's GVWR. It prints no figure. We have no number to give you for that cover, and we will not borrow one. The weight page covers this in more detail.

What the install asks

Rough Country's manual is the one we could read in full. The parts list has the cover, left and right side rails, two drain tubes, two security straps, four front bolts with washers and T nuts, a foam seal, four clamps, a 17 mm spanner, 5 mm and 4 mm hex keys and replacement hook-and-loop strips. The order goes foam seal on the front edge, drain tubes in, rails against the bed wall, one clamp at the front and one at the rear, drain tubes run into the front of the bed wall, cover centered, bolts in, then the locking base and tongue adjusted.

Its check for a bad fit is plain: if the tailgate does not touch the rear seal, move the rails toward the tailgate. Care is mild soap and water, with no fuel, oils or chemicals.

Hard roll-ups and Tacoma deck rails

RealTruck says BAK hard covers on 2016-current Tacomas mean taking the deck rails off for the install and putting them back with drop brackets. The TruXedo Sentry and Sentry CT use large brackets in the rail. Tacoma deck rails has the rest.

Soft or hard?

Soft has more choice, a lighter roll and lower price classes. Hard has the lid. If you can name your bed in a soft title and not in a hard one, that alone can settle it. Soft vs hard lays it out.

Who sells what, by truck

The hard titles we pulled run like this. BAK Revolver X4s: F-150 2015-2020 and 2021-2027, Ram 1500 2009-2023 and 2019-2027, Tundra 2007-2021 and 2022-2027, Silverado and Sierra 2014-19 and 2019-27, F-250 and F-350 2017-2027, Gladiator 2020-2027. RealTruck Sentry CT: F-150 2015-2027, Ram 1500 2019-2027, Silverado and Sierra 2019-2027. Rough Country: Silverado and Sierra 1500 2019-2026 with a 5 ft 10 in short bed, Tacoma 2024-2026 with a 5 ft bed.

So only Rough Country names a bed, and only on two trucks. That is why it gets the pick where it appears, while BAK and Sentry CT, which reach more trucks, do not. If your truck is on the BAK or Sentry list and not on Rough Country's, you can still buy with confidence once a seller confirms your bed in writing. A bed-specific listing or installation sheet is what to ask for. Ford also lists a Hard Rolling cover as an accessory for its own trucks.

Three mistakes with a hard roll-up

Assuming a load figure carries over. RealTruck's number belongs to three named covers. It does not extend to another maker's slats, even if they look alike.

Forgetting the rails on a Tacoma. A BAK hard cover means taking rails off and refitting them with drop brackets. Decide whether you are fine with that first.

Skipping the seal check. Rough Country's own test is whether the tailgate touches the rear seal. Do that before you tighten everything, not after the first rainstorm. Then see the leak fixes if water still gets in.

Still undecided? Open your truck page and see whether a hard title names your years at all. If your bed is not named, write to the seller before you order. That one message can save you a return.

What owners ask

How much weight can a hard roll-up hold?

RealTruck lists 400 lbs for the BAK Revolver X4s, the X4 TS and the Sentry CT. The Rough Country manual tells you not to exceed the rated capacity but prints no figure. Do not assume a figure for any other cover.

Do hard roll-ups need drilling?

RealTruck calls the X4s drill-free and the Sentry CT clamp-on and drill-free, and a Rough Country title says No-Drill Install. Rough Country's manual still has you route two drain tubes into the front of the bed wall, so read that step first.

Do hard roll-ups have drain tubes?

Rough Country's manual lists two drain tubes in the box and has you run them from the front into the bed wall. Read the install sheet of your own cover. Do not assume yours is the same.

What warranty do they carry?

RealTruck lists 5 years for the BAK Revolver X4s and X4 TS. Rough Country's manual lists 3 years for structure, hinges, seals and hardware, for the original purchaser. Sentry CT's warranty is not stated in the article we read.
