How to Install a Roll-Up Tonneau Cover, From Makers' Sheets

On the Tyger sheets we read, a soft roll-up goes on with a ratchet, a 10 mm socket and a Phillips screwdriver, and no drilling step. Rails go on first, clamps stay loose until everything is lined up. Your own sheet comes first, always.

The short version

Position the cover at the front rail, slide the side rail into the bulkhead channel, line the rail's inside edge with the bed rail's inner edge, and set clamps evenly, about 6 to 8 inches from the ends. Keep them loose until aligned. Arch the crossbars upward, set the gap at the locking clip, then test the latch.

This is an overview built from the sheets we could read, mainly Tyger's T1 sheets and Gator's general sheet. It does not replace the sheet that comes with your cover. If they differ, your sheet wins.

Tools

SheetTools it lists
Tyger T1Ratchet wrench, 10 mm socket, Phillips screwdriver
Gator soft9/16 and 1/2 in wrench or socket. Spring clamps recommended. 6 clamps supplied
Rough Country hard17 mm spanner, 5 mm and 4 mm hex keys, in the box

The steps

  1. Read your own sheet first

Check that the part number on the sheet matches your cover.
  2. Clean and seal if asked

Gator has you clean with isopropyl and fit the foam weather seals.
  3. Place the rails

Place the cover on the front rail. Slide the side rail into the bulkhead channel. Line up the inside edge of the side rail with the inner edge of the bed rail.
  4. Set the clamps loose

Space clamps evenly, about 6 to 8 inches from the ends of the rail. Do not tighten them until the rails are positioned.
  5. Tighten and set crossbars

Tighten the clamps per your sheet, then arch the crossbars upward. If they are not arched, water pools.
  6. Set the latch

Keep the gap between locking clip and side rail under 1/16 inch, or it will not lock securely. Latch down before closing the tailgate. Press the hook-and-loop strips after latching.
  7. Recheck after a week

Gator says to check clamps after a week of driving, and periodically after that.

Trucks that change the job

  • Track rails. Tyger's sheets say Nissan and Toyota trucks with a factory utility track rail get separate clamp instructions, attached to the sheet.
  • Tacoma deck rails. Each cover type treats them differently. See deck rails.
  • Over-the-rail liner. Small 2 x 4 in holes are cut for the clamps. See bed liners.

If you bought a hard roll-up

Rough Country's manual runs differently: foam seal on the front edge, drain tube in, rail against the bed wall, one clamp at the front and one at the rear, drain tubes into the front of the bed wall, cover centered, four bolts, then the locking base and tongue adjusted. It ships a 17 mm spanner and two hex keys. More on hard roll-ups.

Do you need to drill?

The Tyger sheets we read have no drilling step, and RealTruck says most roll-ups need no drilling. "Most" is not "all", so read your sheet. The drilling answer goes further.

When it goes wrong

If the latch pops, jams or will not line up, try the latch fixes. If water gets in, go to the leak fixes. If the cover is too short for the bed, Tyger says to move the whole assembly toward the tailgate. If the front bed rail sits low, apply the front seal strip.

Our pick: 2015-2020 F-150Ad

Tyger T1 (2015-2020 F-150, 5.5 ft)

Soft roll-up cover whose listing title reads: 2015-2020 Ford F-150 | Styleside 5.5' Bed | TG-BC1F9029.

Fits, according to the listing (maker's sheet read)

2015-2020 Ford F-150 | Styleside 5.5' Bed | TG-BC1F9029 (read November 3, 2026)

Check your exact year and bed length on the listing before you buy.

Why here: The sheet this guide leans on most. It lists the tools, the rail placement and the latch gap, and it is readable before you buy. Check for your truck's equivalent.

Why buy it

  • The part number in the title ties the listing to Tyger's own sheet
  • That sheet uses clamps, a ratchet with a 10mm socket and a Phillips screwdriver, with no drilling step
  • The sheet covers crossbars, the latch gap and a tension plate for adjusting the fit

Why skip it

  • Over-the-rail bed liner: the sheet says small 2 x 4 inch holes must be cut in the liner
  • Vinyl cover; no weight rating appears on the sheet

What owners ask

Do I need a helper?

The sheets we read do not say you must have one. Gator's sheet recommends spring clamps to hold things while you work. RealTruck says of the Gator SR1 Pro that it can be done solo in under an hour. That is a statement for that cover only.

How tight should the clamps be?

Tyger's sheet says not to tighten clamps until everything is positioned. Gator's sheet carries a fastener torque warning and says to check clamps after a week of driving and periodically after that. Follow your own sheet.

What if the cover comes up short at the tailgate?

Tyger's troubleshooting says to move the assembly toward the tailgate. For a low front bed rail, it says to apply the front seal strip. Rough Country says to move the rails toward the tailgate if it does not touch the rear seal.

What if my bed has an over-the-rail liner?

Tyger's sheet says small 2 x 4 in holes get cut for the clamps. Do that once the clamps are placed, so the holes line up. See our bed liner answer for more.
