How to Clean a Vinyl Tonneau Cover (and What to Keep Off It)

Mild soap, water and a soft brush. Tyger says regular soap and water, no abrasive cleaners. Gator says mild automotive soap and no vinyl conditioners, since they can shrink the vinyl. What you keep off the cover matters more than what you put on it.

The short version

Wash a vinyl cover with mild automotive soap, water and a soft brush, then rinse it. Avoid abrasive cleaners, as Tyger says. Do not use vinyl conditioners on a Gator, because they can shrink the vinyl. Rough Country says no fuel, oils or chemicals on its hard cover. Let the cover dry before you roll it up.

The steps

  1. Rinse

Close the cover. Rinse off loose dirt with a garden hose. Grit is what scratches, so get it off before you start scrubbing.
  2. Wash

Use mild automotive soap and water, with a soft brush. Work from one end to the other.
  3. Rinse again

Rinse off all the soap, including along the rails.
  4. Dry

Let the cover dry before you roll it up. No sheet tells you why, but rolling up a wet cover traps water against the vinyl.
  5. Check the rest

While you are there, check the clamps as Gator says to do periodically. Wipe the rails and seals so they can do their job.

The rinse-first and dry-first order is simple common sense, not a maker's rule. Tyger's and Gator's sheets give the materials, not a sequence. Your sheet wins if it says otherwise.

Things to avoid

Vinyl conditioners on a Gator. The sheet is direct about it: they can shrink the vinyl. A shrunken cover causes trouble with tension and latches, so a dressing that looks nice can cost you more.

Abrasive cleaners. Tyger rules them out. That includes rough pads and scouring powders.

Fuel, oils and chemicals on a Rough Country hard cover. The manual says so. If you spill fuel on any cover, wash it off with soap and water.

A pressure washer up close. RealTruck notes that slight seepage may occur from high-pressure water. That is about water getting in. We read nothing that approves one for cleaning, so we would stick with a hose.

Cleaning in the bed

Dirt builds up on the front seal and in the side rail channels too. Roll the cover open, and wipe them down. If a latch or the channel feels gritty, dirt may be why it jams.

Snow and ice

Do not scrape it off with something hard. Gator says to keep the cover free of snow and ice before you open it, and a soft brush is the kindest way. See snow and ice.

Storing it rolled

Gator says to re-roll a cover periodically if it stays open for a long time. So if yours has been rolled up for a whole summer, unroll it now and then, and clean it while it is open. If you need the install steps again, see how to install.

Check your exact year and bed length on the listing before you buy.

Why here: The sheet with the clearest care rules we read. Whatever cover you run, those rules are a good start.

Why buy it

  • Gator's sheet lists clamps, a 9/16 inch and a 1/2 inch wrench or socket
  • The same sheet states a limited 2-year warranty on hard parts and on the fabric

Why skip it

  • The sheet is Gator's general one and does not name this exact listing
  • The sheet says there is no release from inside the bed, and vinyl conditioners must not be used

If you are still choosing a cover, care is one of the small differences between soft and hard: the sheets ask for the same soap and water on both.

What owners ask

Can I use a protectant spray?

Gator's sheet says no vinyl conditioners, because they can shrink the vinyl. We read no sheet that approves a protectant. If your cover's maker recommends one, follow that. If it says nothing, stay with soap and water.

Can I use a pressure washer?

We read no sheet that approves one. RealTruck says slight seepage may occur from high-pressure water. A garden hose is the safe choice, and take anything that matters out of the bed first.

How often should I clean it?

No sheet we read sets a schedule. Clean it when it is dirty, and before storing it rolled for a long stretch. Also check the clamps while you are there, as Gator says to do periodically.

Do these rules apply to hard covers?

Rough Country's manual says mild soap and water, and no fuel, oils or chemicals, for its hard roll-up. Check your own hard cover's sheet.
