Roll Up Tonneau Cover

Question & answer

Are Soft Roll-Up Covers Secure?

A soft cover hides your gear and slows down a casual thief. It is not a safe. RealTruck calls soft covers a suitable theft deterrent, and says their fabric is susceptible to cuts and punctures. If that worries you, go to slats.

The short answer

Somewhat. RealTruck calls a soft cover a suitable theft deterrent, while saying its fabric is susceptible to cuts and punctures. A locked tailgate helps because the latch sits inside the bed. For valuable gear, RealTruck says hard covers put a solid aluminum barrier in place. No cover here carries a security promise, so keep valuables in the cab.

What's on this page

What the maker says

RealTruck's roll-up article makes two statements:

  • Soft covers are a "suitable theft deterrent", but their fabric is "susceptible to cuts and punctures".
  • Hard covers put "a solid aluminum barrier" between thieves and cargo.

That comes from a company that sells both, so it is about as fair a summary as you will get. Neither statement is a promise. We have no theft data and no cut measurements to add to it.

What a soft cover does for you

It hides what is in the bed, and that is worth something on its own. A thief cannot see the tools or the cooler. It also adds a step: the latch is inside the bed on the covers whose sheets we read, so with a locked tailgate, a passer-by cannot simply lift the end.

What it does not do is stop a blade. Anyone willing to cut vinyl is through it. Budget accordingly.

How to decide

A locked tailgate matters

A cover's lock depends on the tailgate on many setups. The latch sits inside the bed, and a tailgate that opens lets someone reach it. So lock your tailgate. If your truck has no tailgate lock, ask the seller how the cover handles that. Our documents do not cover that case.

Our pick: hard roll-up, 2019-2026 GMAd

Rough Country hard roll-up (2019-2026 Silverado/Sierra 1500, 5'10)

Hard rolling cover whose listing title reads: Chevy Silverado & GMC Sierra 1500 (2019-2026) - Aluminum Slat, No-Drill Install, Fits 5'10 Bed Short Bed.

Fits, according to the listing (maker's sheet read)

Chevy Silverado & GMC Sierra 1500 (2019-2026) - Aluminum Slat, No-Drill Install, Fits 5'10 Bed Short Bed (read November 3, 2026)

Check your exact year and bed length on the listing before you buy.

Why here: If vinyl is the sticking point, this is a hard cover with a named bed and a manual we could read. Its parts list has a locking base and tongue. Buy it if it matches your truck.

Why buy it

  • Rough Country's manual lists clamps, drain tubes and a foam seal for the front of the bed
  • The manual's terms state 3 years on the structure, hinges, seals and hardware

Why skip it

  • The manual tells you not to exceed the rated weight capacity but prints no figure
  • It is a general manual, not one that names this listing

More in soft vs hard. And when you have chosen, go to your truck.

One more point. A cover protects what is under it only while it is closed and latched. A cover left rolled up at the store does nothing, so close it when you park. That is our advice, not a maker's.

What owners ask

What does locking mean on a roll-up cover?

Many listings say locking. It depends on the cover. Tyger's sheets describe a latch and locking clip, and Rough Country's manual a locking base and tongue. Read your sheet to see what locks, and whether your tailgate has to be locked too.

Can a soft cover be locked with a key?

The Tyger and Gator documents we read do not describe a key lock on the cover itself. Check the listing if a key lock is what you want, and ask the seller how it works.

Are hard roll-ups theft-resistant?

RealTruck says hard covers put a solid aluminum barrier between thieves and cargo. Nothing here promises that a cover stops a determined thief, and no document we read says so.
